The Best Magazines - The Best Magazine Company
COBRAMAG GENERATION 2 : THE NEW STANDARD

We have positioned text information at various places throughout this website. Hopefully, most questions will be answered.
Call Virgil Tripp to discuss any magazine or firearm technical issues. Also, telephone orders are gladly taken during CST daytime business hours, and online orders may be made 24/7.

    1) 1911 pistols behave individually when it comes to magazines. They are in a system with the mags. Some pistols like brand A but don't like brand B. Another pistol may like brand B but not brand A. Some are ok with 7 rounds but don't like 8 rounds. Some are ok with round nose ammo but don't like hollowpoints. Some pistols will run any ammo out of any mag. What's the deal?

In my technical opinion, the 1911 feeding design is marginal for modern ammo and capacities. Ninety five years ago, John Browning did not design for modern conditions. How could he? The nose down jam and the nose up 3 point jam are both due to an initial low hit on the feed ramp. Somebody fixed this on the Browning Hi-Power design by laying the barrel ramp over quite a bit more. Glock fixed it on his pistols by bringing the barrel chamber much further down to the nose of the feeding round.  Their  initial nose  hit  is  almost  already in the chamber. The 1911 design has several self locking operational zones where the round can be trapped as a jam.

These 1911 feeding issues can be fixed by massaging the magazine design and/or gunsmithing that particular pistol. The 1911 is the greatest single action pistol design ever created. A smooth running unit is a true joy. A unit that hiccups is a frustrating bad dog. Naturally, I believe our CobraMag is the most advanced 1911 magazine design ever and is the best choice. Are there other decent brands? Sure. Over the years, I have probably bought enough of them to keep everyone in business.

    2) It's hard for anyone to absolutely predict the system behavior of a particular follower/spring/tube unit (mag) with a particular pistol and a particular ammo. Range testing is everything. If your pistol likes it, do it. If your pistol doesn't like it, do something else. Give the pistol whatever brand and type mag it likes. If it really doesn't like any mag from any manufacturer, it's probably time for reliability gunsmithing by a specialized 1911 pistolsmith who understands the details of the system.

    3) Over the years, I have handled and shot countless thousands of 1911 magazines. So have some other people. However, one difference is that I am part of a firearm company that designs, tests, manufacturers and sells 1911(and AR-15) magazines. I am in relentless pursuit of the best possible magazine. Everything we make is designed up to a high standard, not down to a low price. With our tube, the placement of our top or feeding round is as high as possible to get the initial nose hit closer to going into the chamber. Our base pad approach is better. You get a longer tube for more follower and spring but have the same overall mag length. Other mag builders try to get 8 pounds of stuff in a 7 pound bucket. They have some problems with that approach. Look at some comparison photos. Our 8 rounder is a true 8rounder. As far as the bottom of the mag, we have a welded steel floor plate for a flush fit. Otherwise get the removable base pad type for easy cleaning.

The fit and finish on our newly tooled mag tubes is really good. Rear welds are almost invisible. Our part to part variation is small. Our sheet metal associates are some of the best sheet metal people in the business. They have been doing high level sheet metal work for over 30 years. The CobraMag industry exclusive CNC MACHINED AND POLISHED FEED LIPS are a big deal. Our precisely formed feedlips now recieve the ultimate CNC procedure which makes our overall package the best. Up until now nobody could buy mags with fully finished feed lips. Custom gunsmiths in the know had to hand finish feed lips for their knowledgeable customers. Our CNC production feed lips are truly finished. Anyway, range test and find which of our mags works best for your pistol.
